Kim Dong-young was born in Guri , Gyeonggi , South Korea on February 1, 1996. He was very shy during his childhood, and did not like to talk much, but was popular because of his sweet voice. He was described as being one of the brightest students at his school who was greatly appreciated by teachers because of his consistent academic performance and attention in class.
Dong-young began to learn music during his fifth grade school. After wanting to learn to play the flute, his older brother, Gong Myung, sent him to a famous flute player for proper training. Dong-young later joined the school's cultural group and played flute at various cultural events after mastering the instrument. He won first place at the Gyeonggi Youth Arts Festival in 2013.
He later joined SM Entertainment after a successful audition on the SM Casting System.
In December 2016, he was announced as a new member of NCT 127, the second sub-unit of NCT which previously debuted in July, and his official debut took place in January 2017, with the release of the EP Limitless.
Doyoung had appeared on the King of Mask Singer under the name "Assistant Manager" in July 2019. The following month, he was added to the regular cast of Law of the Jungle in Sunda Islands.
In March 2021, Doyoung appeared in his first television drama as the lead of Midnight Cafe Season 3 - The Curious Stalker.
On April 19 2021, it was announced that Doyoung had been cast in his first musical, Marie Antoinette, playing the male lead role of Count Axel von Fersen. As with other musicals, the role is shared with three other actors, alternating performance dates due to scheduling demands.
