Chan was born in Jeju, South Korea and has 2 brothers.

He attended the Dong-Ah Institute of Media and Arts and although his parents owned a record store and he had a very musical background he didn't want to become a singer at first.

From elementry school to middle school he was a soccer player and was thinking of persuing that as a career after highschool. After entering highschool however he enrolled in a dance club. From there he auditioned and trained with JYP for 6 months with fellow A.C.E member Jason.

Chan auditioned and debuted under the label Beat Interactive in 2017 with his current group A.C.E.

In 2017-2018 Chan participated in the rebooting show 'The Unit' alongside his group mate Jun. Going through to the very end Chan debuted with 8 other members under the group name UNB (Acronym for You and Unit B).

It was announced on August 13, 2023 that Kang Yoo Chan would be changing his stage name of "Chan" to his birthname of "Kang Yoo Chan".
