Yuta was born on October 26, 1995 in Kadoma, Osaka, Japan. He is the second youngest of three children, with an older sister and a younger sister. He graduated from Yashima Gakuen University International High School. During his childhood he played soccer from the age of 5 to 16. He wanted to become a professional footballer, a talent he gave up to pursue a career as an idol.

His journey to becoming an idol began in 2011 after watching TVXQ on television, when he went to a bookstore and applied for multiple auditions despite not having any background in singing or dancing. In 2012, he participated in SM's first Global Audition and was one of three out of 10,000 participants to successfully pass. He was introduced as a member of SM Rookies, a pre-debut idol training team, on December 24, 2013.

In 2015, he appeared as the Japanese representative on Abnormal Summit, a show with a panel of non-Korean men, residing in South Korea, debating Korean culture. He expressed his opinions on a variety of topics, such as his support for transgender people, but he had to leave the show to focus on his debut.

He was also the only trainee to compete in ISAC twice in a row in both 2015 and 2016, as well as the one to win NCT's first medal in 2016. He competed for the football team and won gold, proving his talent as a soccer player.

In April 2016, he starred in the first season of the reality show NCT Life, which focused on the SM Rookies and their journey to their debut.

In July 2016, he debuted as a member of NCT 127 with their first EP NCT #127

On November 24, 2020, it was announced that Yuta would host a two-month weekly radio show NCT 127 no: ユウタのYUTA at Home on InterFM897, with the purpose of promoting NCT 127 and their second Japanese mini album LOVEHOLIC in Japan, which charted at number 1 on Oricon. On March 19, 2021, it was announced the radio show broadcast would be extended and converted into regular program.

On June 21, 2021 a Tom Ford Neroli Portofino endorsement with Yuta was announced through Vogue Japan's YouTube channel.
